Smith has been active in the community since the 1960s, when she was raising her daughter Chris. She is a key supporter of Affinity, a South Side-based support group for African-American lesbians, and Women of All Colors and Cultures Together (WACT), a monthly potluck that has been meeting in different Chicagoland neighborhoods for well over a decade.
