Mark Richard Zubro has published 20 books in two mystery series set in Chicago, and he’s still writing. His Lambda-winning Tom Mason and Scott Carpenter series features a happily married gay couple. The Paul Turner series is about a gay Chicago police-detective.

Like his Tom Mason character, Zubro was an openly-gay teacher in a South-suburban junior-high school. He retired after 34 years and now lectures about the craft of mystery writing and about the problems inherent in being an openly gay teacher.

Zubro became involved in the Illinois Gay and Lesbian Task Force in the early eighties. He remains a major donor to both the Lambda Literary Foundation and the Lambda Legal Defense Fund. During his 21-year presidency of his district’s teachers union he increased his Local’s involvement in gay issues, which included lobbying legislative leaders.

Zubro sees his writing as his greatest legacy. He’s the most published openly gay author, using openly gay characters, whose work is published by a mainstream, New York publisher. According to Zubro “With luck those books are a legacy and a beacon to straight and gay people about the power of being openly gay, and with luck, they also tell a good story.”
