Chiola made history by becoming the first openly gay person elected to major office in Illinois, when he won a judge post in the mid 1990s. His pioneering activism helped pave the way for more than a dozen openly gay and lesbian judges by the 2000s. He is also an athlete active in the gay sports leagues.
