Sholl is a social worker in full-time private practice. Her practice is 50% gay, lesbian or bisexual. Sholl was a volunteer in several organizations when she first came out, including working on Hot Wire, and volunteering at programs at Women and Children First. The volunteer position she most enjoyed was being involved with the Horizons youth group for five years. Burkhart is an architect, and works at Northwestern University. The couple, together since 1997, support numerous LGBT groups. They were legally married March 1, 2014, among the early Illinois same-sex couples to get a license in Cook County.
