Bill Greaves is from Queenstown, Maryland. He earned a BS degree from
Bucknell University and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Iowa State
University. In 1978 Greaves moved to the Chicago suburbs to work for
Standard Oil ( Indiana ) , and at that time he came out.

From 1984 through 1986, Greaves was a physical sciences editor at Science
magazine in Washington, D.C., when it was the U.S. journal of record for
AIDS research. As his friends were dying from AIDS, Greaves was editing
research papers that would lead to an understanding of the disease.

During that period Greaves joined DC Front Runners and became involved in
organized LGBT sports. Returning to Chicago in 1988, he joined
Frontrunners/Frontwalkers Chicago and, in 1993, he served as President.

In 1995 Greaves was appointed to the City of Chicago Commission on Human
Relations’ Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Issues and, in 2000, was appointed the Council's Director.
